What is ISO 9001?

This week we have been busy certifying clients from the Software Development and Printing Industries in Bath, Glasgow and Derbyshire. But what is ISO 9001 and how could it be of benefit to your company?

ISO 9001 is a standard that sets out the requirements for a quality management system. It helps businesses and organisations be more efficient and improve customer satisfaction.

It was first published in 1987, so it has been around for many years. It is regularly updated to ensure that it remains relevant to today’s business environment. In its latest version ISO 9001:2015 it incorporates elements such as a stronger focus on stakeholders and the wider context of an organisation to fit the evolving needs of modern business.

ISO 9001:2015 is designed to be flexible enough for use by different types of organisations. For this reason it does not specify what the objectives relating to ‘quality’ or ‘meeting customer needs’ should be. Instead it requires organisations to define these objectives themselves and continually improve their processes to reach them.

Have you ever wondered how an ISO standard is developed?

How is an ISO standard developed?

The key principles in standard development are:

  1. Standards respond to a need in the market.
  2. Standards are based on global expert opinion.
  3. Standards are developed through a multi-stakeholder process.
  4. Standards are based on a consensus.

You can learn more about this on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) website here.

You can also get involved in standards development, whether you are a consumer or in business you can be part of the next generation of standards. Find out more about getting involved.

This week we have been certifying against ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 in Coventry, London and Winchester.

Guidance for SME’s using ISO 9001:2015

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has recently released a handbook for SME’s who are considering ISO 9001:2015 certification

The handbook was written by the same committee who developed the Standard’s 2015 update, so you know the advice in the handbook is relevant and be able to work in line with ISO’s requirements. Included within is advice on the different ways of approaching a quality management system, as well as detailed guidance on each element of the updated Standard.

It also provides thorough explanations of Quality Management Systems, and how it can help your small/medium-sized enterprise improve quality in work, services and products, thereby improving their customer relationship, their credibility, as well as strengthening ties with other stakeholders.

ISO 18404 Launch Event

ISO 18404:2015 Launch

Interface NRM attended the launch of the new ISO 18404:2015. Working in partnership with the Royal Statistical Society, Interface will be part of the team developing the new Sector Scheme, which will enable individuals and companies, to become certified to the new standard, which will demonstrate competency in operating Lean and Six Sigma approaches.

ISO 18404:2015 standard is designed to define the required competencies for individuals and organisations in Six Sigma, Lean, and “Lean and Six Sigma”. This International Standard will use the term “Lean and Six Sigma” to avoid ambiguity in the various terms currently used. Until ISO 18404 there has been no standard designed to equate what is required by an organisation, or what confirms a Black Belt.

To put this into simpler terms, if a company advertises Six Sigma Black Belt, or any other belt, how can they trust, or confirm the capability of a “Black Belt” for example. If a provider states that it employs Six Sigma or Lean, how can a customer be confident of their actual abilities? It is a basic motivation of this ISO Standard to aid in answering these questions and concerns.

If you would like to find out more about ISO 18404:2015 you can visit the ISO Website, or get in touch, we would be happy to help.

Interface NRM are a UKAS Accredited Certification body providing ISO 9001 Certification and ISO 14001 Certification. Call today if you would like a free quote, or fill in our online enquiry form.
